James "Jim" Whitt

James “Jim” Whitt age 85 of Grayson, Kentucky passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Elliott Nursing & Rehabilitation in Sandy Hook after a brief illness. Jim had spent the previous four years residing at Carter Nursing. Mr. Whitt was born April 29, 1941, in Elliott County, Kentucky a son of the late Otha Donald and Dovie Robinson Whitt. Jim was of the Baptist faith, before becoming disabled and unable to attend, he regularly attended Glory Hill Community Church in Greenup County where he loved to sing and enjoying fellowship. In his younger years Jim worked at Brick Yard in Olive Hill, Kentucky and also with Northeast. And, as most families did, fields of tobacco were raised and harvested, which was his other job. In his later years Jim enjoyed bluegrass music, and dancing. Yes, dancing! When he started dancing, he wouldn't quit. There couldn't be anyone who enjoyed dancing as much as Jim Whitt! Jim was preceded in death by his ex-wife and the mother of his children; Joanne Steele Whitt, one stepson; Scotty Steele, brothers; George Whitt, Vincent Whitt, Don Whitt and Woody Whitt. Sisters; Myrtle Skaggs, Julie Smith, Sue Johnson, Katherine Waddell, Dixie Elam, and Mary Mauk. Two nieces and five nephews. Surviving is his companion, best friend, and caretaker of twenty-five years; Lucille Adkins, who never left his side during his sickness or passing. One son; Jimmy (Steph) Whitt of Grayson, Kentucky, one daughter; Crystal Hicks of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Patrick Anthony Steele, Herb (Georgiana) Steele, Greg (Jessi) Steele, step grandchildren; Sara (Charles) Johnson, Riley (Shanna) Steele, Chris (Jayah) Steele, Heather Steele, Che' (Louis) Martinez, Allen Steele, Maddie Steele and Adam Steele. Along with a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends are left to mourn Jim's passing including a special friend Robin Lewis whom he dearly loved. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Whitt & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Tim Porter officiating. Burial will follow in the Whitt Family Cemetery on Horton Flat Road in Elliott County. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour at the funeral home Saturday. Serving as pallbearers are Charles Elam, Josh Yates, Tim Stephens, Nathan Stephens, Denny Adkins, Jordan Adkins, and Donald Wagoner. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Donnie Whitt, John Burl Whitt, Junnie Wagoner, Tony Steele, and Carl Smith.
